Separation Perfected [4' 37"]
The video is based on French social critic Guy Debord's landmark media critique "The Society of the Spectacle." The Spectacle, according to Debord, is "the world of illusion where all attention and consciousness converge," constituting a unified and ever-expanding thought-world constructed daily through our interactions with every form of electronic communication technology. The Spectacle is dominated by images of commercialized community: happy, well-adjusted people connected to each other, and a multitude of products, in meaningful and satisfying ways. The reality, according to Debord, is a never-ending psychic invasion causing the major mental illness of our time, alienation: separation from the self, from others, and from a genuine experience of life. "Separation Perfected" combines Debord's philosophy with a visual representation of the world he critiques.
